To create an unconventional display of time that could transcend the wonted passel of high complications is a horological feat we are all in for and also something that not many brands do. And honestly, such timepieces have a larger appeal simply because of their wider scope of practicality. The 2008-released A. Lange & Sohne Zeitwerk is one of the few watches that has splendidly achieved that with its jumping digital displays for hours and minutes. After a few brilliant iterations, the maison released Zeitwerk Date in 2019, proving that even a perfect timepiece can be made better.

This Zeitwerk Date 148.038, like the Zeitwerk models preceding it, has an instantly recognisable dial. It features two large rectangular apertures connected via the signature bridge in rhodium-plated German silver. The lodestone of this grey dial, this bridge, further drops down to accommodate a small seconds counter at six. A power reserve indicator is placed habitually below the brand signature at 12. After this, however, this Zeitwerk Date diverges a little from its forerunners. A glass ring has been placed at the dial's periphery bearing an Arabic numeral scale for date. Now, a hand to mark the date would have too run-of-the-mill for a Zeitwerk. Therefore, the maison pushed boundaries of ingenuity, indicating the date sans any hand and through the movement of a red marker.
