Grand Seiko celebrates its first timepiece, released in 1960, with this gorgeous re-creation; fans of the maison are in for a treat today!
Why we love it
The first timepiece with the Grand Seiko name hit the market in 1960, a modest, elegant-looking watch with a bold, high-precision movement. With the first creation itself, Grand Seiko had established the level of excellence and precision that we have now come to expect from the brand. To celebrate this watershed year's 20th anniversary, the maison released a special edition watch in 2020 that nodded to the original 1960 model.
This reference SBGW259G is actually a spot-on revival of the original with an updated 38mm case and a 10.9mm height. It is rendered in maison's proprietary Brilliant Hard Titanium, which is highly scratch resistant, lightweight, and robust. It carries a polished finish through the signature Zaratsu technique. The bezel is thin and smooth, the lugs are curvy and slender, and the round profile is as classic as the original.
Even on the dial, the specifications of the original have been well-respected. The blue dial has polished, well-shaped hour indexes and hands. Akin to the original, this Re-creation also flaunts the Diashock xx jewels script at six o'clock. Only here, with the change in the movement, the text says 24 jewels instead of 25.
Powering this watch is the manually wound calibre 9S64, an in-house movement with a great trajectory. It ticks at 28,800 beats per hour and has a power reserve of 72 hours. It ensures an accuracy of +5 to -3 seconds per day; its beautiful finish can be admired through the sapphire crystal caseback.
This Grand Seiko SBGW259G Titanium 60th Anniversary Recreation Of The 1960 Mechanical Original promises a very good pre-owned condition, featuring no scratches and a robust leather strap.
Provenance
At Second Movement, the pre-owned division of Ethos Watches, we adhere to a rigorous verification process where expert watchmakers carefully inspect every watch to certify its authenticity, ensuring it is not counterfeit. We also go to the maximum extent possible to ensure that the timepiece is not a stolen property and that all duties are paid. However, in the absence of any central database, a 100% verification is unlikely for any pre-owned entity in India. Nevertheless, we can still provide a provenance guarantee for watches purchased from Ethos.
Please note all our transactions with sellers are conducted via registered banking channels, accompanied by a signed affidavit, banking proof, and PAN card.
A specific affidavit stating the watch is not a stolen property and that all applicable duties have been paid is also obtained from the seller and is available for buyers in case of legal requirements.
We strive to build trust through transparency and diligence, outlining our verification process and the inherent limitations. Our commitment to integrity shapes every transaction, prioritising your confidence while acknowledging the realities of the pre-owned watch market.
