IWC masters innovation with this Portugieser Perpetual Calendar that shows an accurate view of the moon phase in both hemispheres at once.
Why we love it
Beautifully combining classic design with mechanical complexity, the IWC Portugieser Perpetual Calendar screams excellence from every angle. It occupies a place of pride not just in the maison's repertoire but in the pantheon of complicated watches as well. Housing an in-house perpetual calendar calibre that shows a double moon phase display, this IWC is a grail watch through and through.
Thanks to the plethora of information, the dial is innately complicated in nature. Yet, it retains a fair amount of legibility, thanks to the watch's substantial size, 44mm in diameter, which facilitates the clean positioning of functions on the dial. In addition, there's plenty of artistic aesthetics too. The moon phase sub-dial at 12 looks delightful, with gold-hued stars set against a dark background mimicking the night sky. The sub-dial carries two moon phase displays to mark the moon's position in both the northern and southern hemispheres. IWC promises an accuracy of one-day divergence in 577.5 years, an unparalleled feat! After the moon phase, the other fascinating element is the year indication squeezed between seven and eight markers depicted in four digits to ease readability. The sub-dials at three and nine feature seven-day power reserve, date, day, and running seconds. The applied Arabic numeral markers, sunburst pattern, and signature rail track chapter ring demonstrate IWC's attention to detail.
When turned over, the view is pleasing as the front. A sapphire crystal caseback allows a look into the calibre 52615. Its architecture is phenomenal, with 381 components and 54 jewels. The decoration is precise, as one would expect. Elegant Geneva stripes on the bridges, flanks, and bevelled edges, and the gold winding rotor create a pleasing vista.
This IWC Portugieser is in overall great condition. The case is sharp with light nicks on the front and caseback. The bracelet and clasp have a few minor scratches.
Provenance
At Second Movement, the pre-owned division of Ethos Watches, we adhere to a rigorous verification process where expert watchmakers carefully inspect every watch to certify its authenticity, ensuring it is not counterfeit. We also go to the maximum extent possible to ensure that the timepiece is not a stolen property and that all duties are paid. However, in the absence of any central database, a 100% verification is unlikely for any pre-owned entity in India. Nevertheless, we can still provide a provenance guarantee for watches purchased from Ethos.
Please note all our transactions with sellers are conducted via registered banking channels, accompanied by a signed affidavit, banking proof, and PAN card.
A specific affidavit stating the watch is not a stolen property and that all applicable duties have been paid is also obtained from the seller and is available for buyers in case of legal requirements.
We strive to build trust through transparency and diligence, outlining our verification process and the inherent limitations. Our commitment to integrity shapes every transaction, prioritising your confidence while acknowledging the realities of the pre-owned watch market.
