Louis Moinet's Moon watch is an unparalleled watchmaking feat that brings the extraordinary and the heavenly onto your wrist.
Why we love it
Jules Verne's Around The Moon is a science-fiction prodigy that anticipated a journey to the Moon 100 years before the Apollo XI mission transpired. Louis Moinet, owing to their own fascination with astronomy and heavenly bodies, resolved to tribute the 150 years of this forward-looking, ahead-of-its-time literary marvel with an equally befitting creation.
In 2019, the maison introduced a horological sensation - the Moon watch that came kitted with an actual fragment of a lunar meteorite. Discerning watch connoisseurs and collectors throughout the world were instantly intrigued. The watch gave expressions like exclusive and one-of-a-kind a new definition. It was launched as a limited edition series within the house's Cosmic Art collection in steel and gold. This 18k rose gold version hails from a limited run of just 12 watches, this one being the seventh piece.
This Louis Moinet achieves the same charm, texture, and topography as the Moon on its dial. Rendered in brass, the dial meticulously mimics the surface of the Moon with masterfully set accurate reproductions of famous craters - Gassendi, Tycho, and Cassini. At three o'clock lies the genuine lunar meteorite encased in a capsule. Honestly, the presence of the meteorite capsule is enough to impress anyone, but the amazement doesn't stop there. Around nine o'clock, a skeletonised aperture reveals the escapement and other elements of calibre LM 45. Floating on top of the aperture is a small seconds sub-dial. The hour markers, signature Louis Moinet hands, and the minute track on the inclined inner bezel further elevate the permeating sense of craftsmanship that characterises the dial.
The finishing and details on the 45.4mm round case add high opulence and sophistication to the overall look. It carries screws mounted on the bezel, open-worked lugs, an engraved case band, and a beautifully-designed crown signed with the brand logo. A smooth polished finish is conspicuous throughout the case.
The in-house calibre LM 45 comes with a beat rate of 28,800 vibrations per hour and 48 hours of power reserve. It's visible through the sapphire case back and has a well-designed blue-hued rotor featuring a Clous de Paris pattern. Creating a watch as remarkable and sui generis as this one is a great measure of Louis Moinet's inventive spirit, ingenuity, and promise of excellence.
This Louis Moinet Moon watch comes from a limited edition of just 12 timepieces. It's in fairly good pre-owned condition with light scuffs on the case, bezel, and case back. Its leather strap is firm and sturdy, but the clasp bears a few negligible nicks.
Provenance
At Second Movement, the pre-owned division of Ethos Watches, we adhere to a rigorous verification process where expert watchmakers carefully inspect every watch to certify its authenticity, ensuring it is not counterfeit. We also go to the maximum extent possible to ensure that the timepiece is not a stolen property and that all duties are paid. However, in the absence of any central database, a 100% verification is unlikely for any pre-owned entity in India. Nevertheless, we can still provide a provenance guarantee for watches purchased from Ethos.
Please note all our transactions with sellers are conducted via registered banking channels, accompanied by a signed affidavit, banking proof, and PAN card.
A specific affidavit stating the watch is not a stolen property and that all applicable duties have been paid is also obtained from the seller and is available for buyers in case of legal requirements.
We strive to build trust through transparency and diligence, outlining our verification process and the inherent limitations. Our commitment to integrity shapes every transaction, prioritising your confidence while acknowledging the realities of the pre-owned watch market.
