An unconventional timepiece from Rolex — this charming Cellini Prince — with a distinctive rectangular case and an open caseback is a hard-to-find gem that must not be missed!
Why we love it
For connoisseurs who walk off the beaten track searching for something unique and honest, here’s an often overlooked Rolex that’s singular and unconventional through and through. Rolex Cellini Prince rejects every loved and recognisable Rolex detail in favour of offbeat, uncommon elements. You won’t find the likes of a fluted bezel, link bracelet, or a round profile on this Cellini Prince reference 5440/8; instead, it sports a refreshing rectangular case, an exhibition caseback, and charming art deco aesthetics.
Nor too large and neither too thick, this reference comes with an 18k yellow gold rectangular case measuring 28 x 35mm, but the shape is not all that stands out. The case flaunts a glistening polished finish throughout, which elegantly complements the watch’s royal, luxe aura. While the slender stepped bezel integrated with the lugs creates a cohesive look, the sunray pattern of the case-bands echoes the art deco influences.
More of such influence can be spotted on the dial, perhaps the first thing anyone notices about this Cellini. Champagne in hue, the dial flaunts a beautiful Clous de Paris pattern throughout, whose pointed pyramids forge an interesting play of lights. Akin to the Rolex Prince of 1928, this reference also carries an hour and minute sub-dial at 12 o’clock followed by a smaller, running seconds sub-dial in a vertical configuration. Overall, the dial forwards a vintage-inspired but balanced and legible look.
Visible through the sapphire crystal caseback, manual-winding calibre 7040 beats at 28,800 bph and provides a power reserve of 72 hours. It’s a classic COSC-certified Rolex movement with the patented paraflex shock protection and is composed of 21 jewels. The movement bridges come decorated with the signature pyramid pattern to match the dial. Finally, this watch wears elegantly on the wrist via the exotic alligator strap in a complementing brown shade.
This Rolex Cellini Prince 5440/8 is in overall very good pre-owned condition with minor marks on the case and caseback. While the leather strap is in great shape, the yellow gold clasp securing it features light scratches.
Provenance
At Second Movement, the pre-owned division of Ethos Watches, we adhere to a rigorous verification process where expert watchmakers carefully inspect every watch to certify its authenticity, ensuring it is not counterfeit. We also go to the maximum extent possible to ensure that the timepiece is not a stolen property and that all duties are paid. However, in the absence of any central database, a 100% verification is unlikely for any pre-owned entity in India. Nevertheless, we can still provide a provenance guarantee for watches purchased from Ethos.
Please note all our transactions with sellers are conducted via registered banking channels, accompanied by a signed affidavit, banking proof, and PAN card.
A specific affidavit stating the watch is not a stolen property and that all applicable duties have been paid is also obtained from the seller and is available for buyers in case of legal requirements.
We strive to build trust through transparency and diligence, outlining our verification process and the inherent limitations. Our commitment to integrity shapes every transaction, prioritising your confidence while acknowledging the realities of the pre-owned watch market.
